Black Holes
The photos in this gallery could easily be photos of black holes light years away taken by one of our space probe satellites. They're not.
I went to Juneau, Alaska, with my wife Karen to spend the year-end holidays with our daughter Katie and her husband Sam. While there, we visited many of the places we'd visited two summers ago. The only difference was that the temperatures for this visit were is the 20s. The lakes were covered by clear, mirror-finish ice.
I was on one of these lakes … Auke Lake ,,, making some photos of the lake and its scenic background. When I looked down, I saw small black holes with what looked like arms of white ice crystals seeming to radiate out from the black hole. Or were they being sucked into the black hole? I thought it looked similar to the night sky, with stars being drawn into black holes.
I walked around and made photos of the holes I thought most compelling. They are in this gallery.
I didn't know what they were, but an internet check leads me to believe they might be gas holes. These are formed when gasses bubble up and actually "wear" a hole in the ice. These were beautiful. I've looked at other ice surfaces since returning to Colorado, but have found nothing like this.
I hope you enjoy this ice bound daytime look at our night sky!
